La Louvre - Paris
by GELiTINs - Exhibition March 1 - April 20, 2008 at the ARC

Opening: February 29, 6pm

The ARC programme for 2008 begins with a real event:
the total takeover of its entire space by GELiTIN and all the extravagant, zany and bohemian individuals, gelatin calls on to contribute to its works.

After GELiTINs flamboyant appearance at the last Biennale di Venezia and their controversial contribution to Le Printemps de Septembre à Toulouse, they have finally arrived in the city of love to present their show “La Louvre - Paris”.

“La Louvre - Paris” consists of over three thousand works by GELiTIN and their vast and growing entourage. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, knittwork, ...materials ranging from caramel to wool, from cheese to toilet paper.
Classic greek landscapes, portraits, furniture, lamps, jewellery, pottery, a joyously irreverent creation of an enormous, chaotic, proliferating universe, searching for a logic structure.

The exhibition catalogue will be a newspaper serving as a forum with texts by Oleg Kulig, Lawrence Weiner, Jacques Servin, Cerith Wyn Evans, Samuel Beckett, Midori Matsui, Franz West, Liam Gillick, Raymond Pettibon, Christoph Büchel and many more... for only 2 euros

ARC is also proud to announce the presentation of: “gelatins acb”, the big and well worth book about the first 100 years of gelatins works, shows and failures.
“La Louvre - Paris” will be a present for the people of Paris and all art lovers who will travel to see it.

X, the library's hell,
Eros in solitary confinement

For the general public today, the Library's Hell is understood as a legend, a fantasy, the major territory of prohibition that feeds back all curiosities. But the gap is wide between myth and reality. Therefore the ambition of the exhibition the BnF is dedicating to this obscure part of its collections is to lift the veil on the truth of Hell. One should trace the history, full of surprises, of the constitution of this abstract place, mental - a "symbol", a classification number which refers to the "reserved" consultation - where are collected texts and images deemed contrary to public morality.

The exhibition offers a double journey. One is about history: how this hell was established in the Department of papers and the Department of Prints? How has it changed? The second offers a stroll through the contents of this Hell: What are the books, documents, images that have been classified there? Those routes through literature as they are not usually taught are going to meet an imaginary world where the characters obey all the fantasies of desire, where excess of language becomes pamphleteer and the political discourse, pornographic. This world is a world of anonymity, pseudonym, false addresses, misleading dates, clandestine publishers, closed places, convents, boudoirs, brothels, but also prisons libraries. Writers such as Sade, Apollinaire, Louÿs, Battle and a few other are the forever anonymous actors to the celebration of eroticism and sex between the sixteenth and Twentieth century. A particular attention is given to the first exhibition of pornographic photographies and Japanese prints are exposed as well thanks to the generosity of the first Western art collectors whom made donation to the libray.

In 2008, Andy Warhol would have turned 80
Shadows and other signs of life @ the Chantal Crousel Gallerie

Countless exhibitions have addressed the many facettes of the work of one of the 20th century most genious and influential artists.

For the present exhibition, Chantal Crousel has chosen a specific selection of works, that emphasize the constant presence of the SHADOW, an essential element in the work of Andy Warhol. The shadow that extends the document (subject) into its fiction - that projects the defined into its con-sequence : the infinite. From the start of the artist's process, the shadow is an inseparable actor/factor: the b/w photographs shot in the studio by the artist in search of his model. These still-lives, portraits, will eventually develop into the complex drawings, prints and paintings we know.

The shadow, and other signs of life, are declined here through 96 works:

-b/w composition photographs (Skulls, Hammer and Sickle, Gems, Stuffed Animals, a.o),
Polaroids (Caroline of Monaco) and stitched photographs (Male Nudes),
-stencils, anticipating the "Rorschach" paintings and the "Shadow" paintings and prints,
-graphite drawings (Knittings, Space Fruits, Cells, Hammer and Sickle, a.o.) and eventually their
derivated prints,
-Piss Paintings: urine on gesso on canvas,
-"Shadows II", a set of 6 diamond dust prints (ed. 6/10).

Most of these works have been rarely - if at all - exhibited.!

Chantal Crousel thanks Joel Wachs, Vincent Fremont, Tim Hunt and the Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for their precious assistance.!

At the occasion of the exhibition, a book documenting the works, accompanied by an essay by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh: "Anniversary Notes for Andy Warhol", will be published by the Galerie Chantal Crousel / Walther König Verlag.

Please note the galley will be open by appointment from to December 26 to January 02, 2008

An American View: Barbara Ernst Prey
at the Mona Bismarck Foundation until January 12, 2008

Drawing from the technical tradition of renowned American artists such as Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper and carrying on their development of a truly American school, Barbara Ernst Prey’s painting is based on European traditions, but moves in its own direction in terms of treatment and subject matter. These paintings evoke the somewhat subtle symbols of the spirit of America and its cultural foundations – a fluttering home-sewn quilt, lingering twilight on the coast of Maine, Adirondack chairs grouped in the family garden, lobster fisherman’s dories at rest – symbols of the deep, cultural spirit which binds the United States. Ask any American. These are images of the soul of the country and its unified dreams, emblems which speak to fifth generation Americans, as well as newly arrived immigrants.

In 1987 he shows there his sculptures and "staged" in his one-man show "Il creche." 20 years later, in the very same place, and after "1001è" (1989), "Les Pitres du Socle" (1990) and "Cabaret Mosner" (1993), Ricardo Mosner exposes its objects, his bags and in the back room, his new theater of operations under the name "Ubuesque Mosnerian"? he did not find any other title available ("title in progress" was already being used by the artist in 1990 and "Ubu Roi Ahora Mismo" was his first theatrical experience in 1968).

From Kuroda to Foujita
Japanese painters in Paris at MCJP until Saturday, January 26, 2008

During the Meiji era (1868-1912), Japan renovation began. Artists are beginning to become familiar with new technologies, including oil painting. Drifting away from the pictorial tradition of the archipelago, these "Western-style" painters therefore increasingly traveled to Europe, particularly Paris, frantically studying modern painting. They'll play a crucial role in the modernization of Japanese art. This exhibition covers half a century of Western-style painting (yôga) in Japan. More than 50 paintings are presented, masterpieces by a dozen artists who stayed in Paris. A rare opportunity to discover these painters who still enjoy a huge reputation in Japan but are rather unknown in France, with the exception of Foujita.

The exhibition consists of four sections :

The meeting between Raphael Collin and Seiki Kuroda

On his first visit to France from 1884 to 1893, Kuroda Seiki studied oil painting with the academic painter Raphael Collin. This meeting has been crucial for the development of yôga painting in Japan. Displayed side by side, the works of both artists stress the considerable influence of the french painter on Kuroda. Upon his return to Japan, Kuroda took over as head of the department of Western painting at the Fine Art Academy in Tokyo. It allowed him to introduce not only the pictorial techniques of the Western academic, but also the enlighted style of naturalism represented by the Impressionists.

Japanese painters at the 1900's Paris Universal Exhibition

Over a century ago, Seiki Kuroda, Chû Asai, Eisaku Wada and Takeji Fujishima works were already shown in Paris, on the occasion of the 1900's Paris Universal Exhibition. The exhibition was a shock to these Japanese artists. Some of them took this opportunity to settle in France and create. Changes occurred then gradually in their styles: Kuroda looked toward Impressionism; his pupil Wada refined his academic style; Fujishima claimed an oriental aesthetic sense ; Asai for its part, shifted away from oil and headed towards decorative arts.

Yasui and Umehara, two painters from Kyôto

In the early twentieth century, Sôtarô Yasui and Ryûzaburô Umehara completed their painting training in Paris. Both were from Kyoto, a city steeped in ancient traditions. Amazed by the works of Renoir, Umehara embarked on a brightly colored style, in search of a daring originality. Yasui gradually mastered the technics of drawing, influenced by Pissarro then Cezanne. Together they'd create a purely Japanese occidentalized painting style.

Foujita and the Japanese painters in Paris during the interwar

Since 1918, the Japanese flocked again in France. Among them, five painters presented in this section are enthusiastic about their stay in the capital, tossed up in the whirlwind of avant-garde movements: Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism ... The best known is Tsuguharu Foujita (Leonard), emblematic of the Ecole de Paris. Vlaminck having strongly criticized his academic style, Yûzô Saeki moved towards representations of the slums of Paris. Hanjirô Sakamoto prefered to paint a landscape whose great modernity reveals a very personal style. Abandoning the academic style, Zenzaburô Kojima invented in the 20's a daring decorative style, "the merger between Western subject and Oriental spirit." Taro Okamoto marvels at the work of Picasso, joined the Abstraction - Création group before joining the surrealists. Upon their return they will have to face a problem peculiar to Japanese painters: translating Japanese identity to Western style.

Last chance -
GUILLAUME BRESSON
at the Galerie LACEN until November 4th, 2007

It was only a week ago that I discovered Guillaume Bresson's work for the first time at "Slick 07" and I was so impressed and seduced by his mature approach to modern painting that I decided to present his latest exhibition at Gallerie Lacen despite the fact that it is nearly finished. The mix between classical composition of urban landscapes and the "clair-obscur" impeccable technique combined to the darkness and the violence of the situation it represents is just stunning.

Like Le Caravage with mythical heroes in his own times, Bresson seems to be the voice of a forgotten surburban youth, fighting to create their own heroes in parking lots and empty halls. In a two tone and over-contrasted environment, Bresson re-invent the "Historical" painting style where gladiators are fighting choregraphic battles in black & white. Fight club energy and adrenalin are pumping through his work.
Well, I guess you got my point, I love is work and I'm looking forward discovering his new work which seems to be more colourful.
